The Excellant Adventure of Charlie
We had only adopted and taken possession of Charlie less than two days before he managed to escape. We were warned that Charlie, a Havanese, had been a puppy-mill dog for over four years and was highly nervous and non-trusting of humans. We felt we could fix him with love but didn't have enough time because he bolted out the front door jerking the leash out of my hand and ran off into the night to experience freedom on what was gong to be a short walk before we and our dinner guests went to the table.
Judy Zink, a neighbor here on Spring Hammock Drive, was driving by at the time and offered to help. I jumped into her car, and we were able to keep up with Charlie all the way to the backyards of Barrett across from Walden Lake Elementary School where we lost him in the darkness. Three teenagers tried to help us, but Charlie was even too quick for them. So we had to give up the search at that point and continued again at 7AM on Monday, the next day, and every day for a week after that.
Friends, neighbors and strangers here in Walden Lake were wonderful! We received many, many calls from those who had seen a little white dog. Some calls were about a dog wearing a red collar, some were wearing blue collar
but ours was wearing a black harness with a yellow leash attached. Mail carriers, service people in trucks, an engineer surveying over on Trapnell were among the folks that threw themselves into the hunt. Sightings of the real Charlie actually happened throughout the week on: 1.Barrett & Griffin 2.the west entrance on Griffin & Turkey Creek 3.on Country Club Road 4.at the Lid-Works factory However, Charlie always avoided capture. The Havanese Rescue people sent trained helpers daily from Orlando, Bradenton, Punta Gorda, and even Ft. Lauderdale. They also wired notices to vets, police, schools, groomers, and more.
On Sunday a week later, a man on Turkey Creek called to say Charlie was in his front yard and had been there all morning. He went on an errand and saw the sign and came home and called us. The Havanese Rescue people swarmed the property with other Havanese dogs, nets and blankets, and food and water, until a tired and hurt Charlie was recovered to safety. He had been bitten in the neck and in the side probably by a larger dog. The wound was infected, which most likely slowed him down allowing us to get him. We took him to Blue Pearl Emergency in Brandon which is open 24 hours a day even on Sunday. We would have taken him to fabulous Christy Layton, but it was late afternoon on Sunday. Charlie had surgery within about an hour of capture, and he is going to be fine.
We heartily want to thank the Havanese Rescue people of Florida along with the Walden Lake master association for their help and, especially , all the people of Walden Lake, ClubhouseWoods, Aston Woods and the Westwood neighborhoods. Without all their help, this emotionally and physically grueling experience would not have had a happy ending for us and for little Charlie.
